9. “Atom Heart Mother”
In the wake of bandleader Syd Barrett’s takeoff from Pink Floyd, the extra band individuals battled for a few consequent collections to reclassify their sound. With the opening title track on Atom Heart Mother, it seemed like they at last had something. Depicted by Gilmour as the “subject from a fanciful Western,” the track drew on their late encounters composing film soundtracks to make a sprawling, epic of a track that remaining parts intriguing for the majority of its 23 minutes. This was the band’s first ultra-long track, and however they would later best “Atom Heart Mother,” it holds a film-like grandness all its own.
